About the Artist

Neil Robertson – Painter, Traveller and Serious Dog Lover

“The world is a book, and those who do not travel read only one page” (St. Augustine).

Born in Glasgow, Scotland, in 1942, I grew up and was educated in London.

I received my training in painting at the prestigious Chelsea School of Fine Art in the 1960s and went on to a teaching career at one of London’s oldest secondary schools, where I rose to become Head of the Art Department. After the public sector, I continued to teach painting at adult education establishments for ten more years.

Working mainly in watercolour and oil, my work is often inspired by my experience of the natural world as an outdoorsman, hiker, back country camper, kayak coach and certified Mountain Leader.

This love of landscape, wild places and the mountain environment began with travels in Turkey and Iran in the sixties, and has taken me to many exciting places since.

On this site you will see scenes from the Himalaya in Nepal, the Atlas Mountains of Morocco, the Peruvian Andes and Machu Picchu, Petra and the Wadi Rum desert in Jordan, the Hawaiian Islands, the Swiss Alps, the Pyrenees and the Rocky Mountains.

All that time spent in the wilds brings a fresh appreciation of hot coffee in a cosy café or a cool drink in a bistro by the sea. So my portfolio includes artwork from my base in the wonderful old city of Luxembourg as well as from Venice, the Amalfi coast, the Portuguese Algarve and Boulder, Colorado, where I have a second home.

As a serious dog lover, in addition to portraying my own, I’ve enjoyed commissions to paint portraits of other people’s pets. You’ll see some examples from private collections here – please contact me to discuss creating your own memories.
